What to Expect from Life In The City

We believe that worship is where the best of teaching and all the arts combine into one fluid experience that is unique and exciting. We believe in using all our God-given talents for expression through music, art, theater, and dance. This is a space where creativity is welcomed and where excellence is nurtured. Expect to be greeted with opportunities to worship in a multi-sensory, multi-purposed fashion. Expect the unexpected.

We celebrate a diverse body of believers and affirm our community’s acceptance of the old and the young, the native and the traveler, the weary and the energetic. We are an open and affirming faith community. Expect to be welcomed and to have diversity affirmed.

You can expect prayer to be silent and loud. Expect to be prayed for and with. Expect to be invited but not pushed. Expect a community that humbly seeks a connection with the divine and actively prays for the needs of others.

One of the highest values of Life in the City is to imitate the self-giving, other-oriented, healing love of God in Jesus Christ so that all may have health and wholeness. This includes being radically inclusive, accepting and kind to all who we encounter; humbling ourselves before God and one another; and forgiving one another as God has forgiven us.

Encouraging each person to claim his or her unique individuality, creativity and purpose is important to the new church. It is vital that we lift each other up, affirm one another’s unique gifts and graces, and share the hope we have in Christ. Judgment has no place in the life of the new congregation, nor does gossip, slander, or malice.

Being connected to God and one another beyond the weekly worship service is vital to the spiritual health of individual participants and the overall faith community. Thus, the goal of getting people connected to God and the faith community is the primary motivation shaping the Life in the City discipleship process. Participation in Life Groups is critical for support, accountability, care and deepening in our relationship with God.

Living with an attitude of gratitude and generosity is of vital importance to Life in the City UMC. Being grateful for each moment we have, no matter what we are experiencing, is key to living the abundant life. We believe in living generously out of that abundance, refusing to be captivated by a scarcity mindset.  NOTE: This picture was taken during a mission trip to Rwanda.
